Peaceful Town in SC- Fort Mill
December 16th, 2009 categories: Great Neighborhoods
Fort Mill, SC is a peaceful town in York County. It shares its border with the state of North Carolina, making Charlotte its nearest metropolitan center. With just around 7,500 residents, Fort Mill maintains a cozy feel, where neighbors know one another and are active in their community. The median age of the town’s residents is 34, with an annual household income of $45,237 and home value around $180,000. The public schools in Fort Mill are excellent, with small classes for added individual attention. The school district prides itself on its progressive teaching methods, which continually evolve to prepare students for the future. The schools are noted for utilizing advanced technologies in the classroom, and making computer labs and software available to students. The district’s standards and test scores exceed those in the rest of the state, and consistently set a national standard.
The town has experienced steady economic growth, thanks in part to the Fort Mill Downtown Association, Area Council, and York County Regional Chamber of Commerce. These groups work together to implement an ambitious plan to enrich retail trade and commercial development in Fort Mill and the surrounding areas. These bodies provide marketing, support, and sales opportunities to its businesses. They have been successful in attracting consumers from neighboring Charlotte.
Through various promotional activities and public relations campaigns, existing businesses in the area have seen an influx of new revenue. This, of course, attracts the attention of other establishments looking to expand into Fort Mill’s business friendly environment. This plan and its implementation have resulted in both retail and manufacturing becoming the largest employment sectors in the region. Wholesale, professional services and finance round out the largest employment opportunities.
The climate in Fort Mill has a magnificent four seasons. The area’s scenic beauty is accentuated by old growth maple, hickory, chestnut, birch and sassafras trees. Throughout the year, they create a magnificent backdrop, and residents here spend their free time hiking or driving to view the seasonal changes. Many enjoy a weekend getaway to Sugarloaf Mountain. Named for its conical shape that resembles an old fashioned sugar cone, this is a great spot for hiking and camping. The less adventurous come to see the historic Beverly Robinson estate and mansion.
Like much of the rest of the country, AAA Baseball is experiencing resurgence in Fort Mill. With ticket prices soaring for Major League games throughout the nation, Minor League baseball is an opportunity for an inexpensive family outing. The stadiums are reminiscent of old time ball fields, and players and coaches remain accessible for a chat and an autograph for their fans. In the Fort Mill Area crowds come to see the Charlotte Knights, a White Sox affiliate. And while parents are
sometimes dismayed by the social activities of their children’s Major League heroes, the Charlotte Knights are not only good role models, but good coaches. Each summer, they host aspiring youth ball players in a two-day skills clinic.Fort Mill is a cozy community with a solid base of family values and economic development. Its residents work to maintain the small town friendliness and flavor, while laying the groundwork for a healthy future.
